Stretching south of Lake Balaton and split in two by the Danube River, South Hungary is a region with many attractions. The varied landscape with its valleys and rolling hills is an ideal destination for a family holiday rental.
A holiday home in South Hungary
The most attractive city in the region is Pécs, a university town in the foothills of the Mecsek Mountains. Book a holiday apartment or holiday house near the city centre and explore its many museums. To taste Hungarian wines and sample the local produce visit Siklós in the Villány Siklós region. Among the highlights of the city are Siklos Castle and the Malkocs Bey Mosque. To experience more of Hungary’s rich tradition and history rent a holiday home in Kecskemét, the birthplace of the composer Zoltan Kodály. Well known for its many museums and secessionist architecture, Kecskemét is located halfway between Szeged and Budapest. Stroll around the streets and enjoy a glass of wine or palinka, a Hungarian fruit vodka, at the Kecskeméti Tavern. Visit the city's ancient churches or some the many museums scattered amongst the city. The Kecskemét Fun Baths and Water Slide Park are popular with families as are the thermal baths and the zoo.
The best time to visit
There are four different seasons in Hungary offering distinct experiences all year round. In summer, between June and August, holiday rentals are popular with travellers who seek adventure and want to explore the region whilst enjoying the sunshine. Spring and autumn are both mild and with average temperatures around 24°C, are ideal for romantic getaways. Although winter temperatures can drop as low as -10°C, holiday rental is still popular in the larger cities. Visit the many historic cities, enjoy the thermal spas for which the region is famous, take your children hiking or horse riding and taste the local food and wine.
